If you're nearby, it's worth the visit- the cover image really gives me a headache, everything looks off and doesn't accurately reflect the beauty of the basilica.

The photograph was taken (spontaneously) during high mass on Good Friday in 2018.

Here are some key historical highlights:

  • Founded in 1605: Originally known as the Convent of San Sebastian in Comintang, it was administered by the Augustinians and built using light materials.

  • Rebuilt Multiple Times: After the 1754 eruption of Taal Volcano, the town and church were relocated. The current structure began construction in 1779 and was completed in stages until 1894

  • Seat of the Diocese: In 1910, Lipa was chosen as the seat of the new Diocese of Lipa, beating out other towns like Taal and Batangas. The cool climate reportedly influenced the decision.

  • Post-War Restoration: The cathedral was heavily damaged during World War II. Restoration efforts in the 1950s were led by Msgr. Alejandro Olalia.
